Anaconda (2025) slithers back onto the screen as an action-adventure horror/comedy, rebooting the 1997 cult favorite. After watching the trailer and spotting a cast we genuinely loved, FearScale was cautiously excited. The original Anaconda thrived on campy thrills and over-the-top danger, but this reboot teased a heavier dose of comedy. Unsure whether the scares would still strike, we recruited the perfect test subject: someone with a legitimate fear of snakes, hoping that fear alone might tighten the coil on her heart rate.
SYNOPSIS:
A group of friends are going through a mid-life crisis. They decide to remake a favorite movie from their youth but encounter unexpected events when they enter the jungle.
Where We Monitored: Fandango at Home
Test Subject: Stacy
Age: 39
Gender: Female
Fears: Ophidiophobia or the fear of snakes
Resting HR: 60-65bpm
Walking HR: 80-85bpm

ANALYSIS:
The film opens on a surprisingly serious note, featuring a minor jump scare and a brief chase sequence that nudged our subject’s heart rate upward. Once the title card hit, however, her pulse quickly settled into a calm resting range of 63–65 BPM for nearly the next twenty minutes. Early banter between a few of her favorite comedic actors produced a couple of small spikes, but these were more smile-inducing than pulse-pounding.
Things finally began to heat up once the snakes entered the picture. A handful of tense moments and an off-screen kill around the 44-minute mark pushed her heart rate to 80 BPM. Had this been an R-rated, on-screen kill, we suspect those numbers would have climbed much higher. The film clearly aims for a Tropic Thunder-style comedic vibe, but while the banter earned some chuckles, it never had our subject laughing hard enough to truly shake the readings.
As the characters slog through swampy terrain at night, with a massive snake on the loose, our subject’s average heart rate rose to around 70 BPM. The mix of suspense and light comedy kept her engaged and on edge during the film’s middle stretch. The standout moment came at 1:18, when a Jack Black scene combined genuine laughter with tension, delivering the highest recorded spike of the film at a respectable 84 BPM. It’s also worth noting that the cast finally found their rhythm in the third act, and the comedy improved as the movie headed toward its finale.
CONCLUSION:
Anaconda (2025) clearly wants to capture the silly spirit of the original, but the execution is a bit all over the swamp. The scares aren’t strong enough, and the comedy doesn’t strike often enough to drive sustained heart-rate spikes. With only three true laugh-out-loud moments and a few mildly tense snake scenes, this reboot ultimately lacks real bite.
From a FearScale perspective, Anaconda (2025) is more harmless garden snake than apex predator, fun in spots, but never enough to truly make your heart race.
