Annihilation (2018) Live Heart Rate Breakdown

Annihilation is a sci-fi thriller from 2018 that shares several similarities with H.P. Lovecrafts short story The Colour Out of Space. This cosmic horror captivated our subject and provided our team with the following heart racing results.

Where to Watch:

SYNOPSIS:

Resting HR: 60-65bpm

Walking HR: 80-85bpm

ANALYSIS:

The opening of the film took its time to establish an important relationship. It also introduced strange behavior which led to our first spike of 73bpm. But it wasn’t until the team entered ‘The Shimmer’, a strange and cosmic phenomena, that we began to see our subject’s pulse quicken.

At 35:00, a gruesome surprise jolted her pulse to 78bpm. An uncomfortable gory scene gave us another escalation and was quickly followed up by a bear-y good jumpscare. These horrific attacks were impressive but unfortunately, they were too quick to sustain momentum in our subject. She was engrossed with the storyline but a lack of constant tension kept her heart rate from achieving terrifyingly high levels. The most suspenseful and uncomfortable scene arrived at 1:17 where we recorded a powerful peak of 85bpm. But this is where the scares would end as our subject enjoyed the hypnotic finale.

CONCLUSION:

Annihilation (2018) is a trippy thriller that drops a tab of acid on the tongue of your typical alien movie. The film explores a strange and beautiful world filled with horrific oddities. But as mesmerizing as the production was, it could not produce enough anxiety to keep our subject on edge for any extended length of time. This diminished the calorie burn and left our subject with the munchies after viewing.
