Clown in a Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield (2025) is an American slasher film adapted from Adam Cesare’s 2020 novel of the same name. Early reviews on IMDb run the gamut, from a dismal 1 or 2 to a more optimistic 7 or 8, making it clear this killer clown tale has split audiences right down the middle. With such a mixed bag of opinions, we couldn’t resist stepping into the cornfield ourselves to uncover the truth.

We’d already read and loved the book, but our subject went in cold, with no idea what horrors, or hijinks awaited. Could the creepy clown from the trailers serve up enough corny chaos to send her heart rate soaring? Or would this circus act fall flat on its big red nose? Either way, we were dying to find out if Clown in a Cornfield had us screaming… or just clowning around.

ANALYSIS:

The film opens with small-town charm, an old-fashioned parade and a classic slasher-style kill that nudged our subject’s heart rate from a resting 63 BPM to a respectable 73 BPM. But as the story unfolded, a lack of character development made it hard for her to stay emotionally invested. The first half dragged, and it wasn’t until nearly an hour in that we saw a genuine spike, thanks to a surprisingly suspenseful scene at 50:00 and an unexpected plot twist that had her seeing clowns around every corner. Her heart rate climbed to its peak at 89 BPM during that moment of mayhem. Unfortunately, the shocks that followed were fleeting and mild, offering more honks than horror.

CONCLUSION:

Clown in a Cornfield (2025) is a silly slasher that never quite juggles its scares and story into something truly terrifying. While the mid-movie twist was genuinely unique and unexpected, the buildup lacked tension and emotional stakes, making it hard to stay invested. The kills were quirky, the visuals occasionally fun, but the fear factor remained firmly underwhelming. Instead of building to a pulse-pounding crescendo, the film shuffled to the finish line with more of a sigh than a scream. In the end, Clown in a Cornfield isn’t the stuff of nightmares and when it should’ve gone for the jugular, it tripped over its own oversized shoes.
