First up in our sequels competition is Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981). Camp Crystal Lake may be shut down but there is another camp terrorized by the infamous slasher. Introducing Jason as the killer, F13 Part 2 has been said to rival the original in story and pure terror. Just how scary could this sequel be? We use our subject from the original Friday the 13th (1980) monitoring to find out.
Test Subject: Leah
Age : 35
Gender: Female
Fears: Reptiles
Resting HR: 65 bpm
Walking HR: 75-80 bpm
ANALYSIS:
The film began with a recap of the original ending so if you get scared by watching the same thing twice then you may need to get your heart checked. Our subject had a couple minor blips toward 80bpm before nosediving for most of the middle build. The menacing human factor in Jason got the jump scares peaking as we moved through the third act. And just passed the hour mark was where we saw the highest spike at 85bpm. But it’s more of a spear rather than a spike that causes our subject’s heart-rate to climax.
CONCLUSION:
While the elevated numbers aren’t nearly as impressive as our more recently monitored films, the scares in this sequel do occur quite frequently. The filmmakers upped the kills which left us with some gruesome scenes but as we have monitored in the past, anticipation is what tends to increase the heart-rate. This film’s final average does surpass the original, unfortunately for the franchise it will be going up against Halloween 2 (1981), another popular sequel. Be sure to check back for the results!
