Our terrifyingly accurate results landed the film within the top twenty of our heart racing leaderboard. Did the third installment surpass the fear created by the original? Find out if the shudder exclusive film Hell House III: Lake of Fire reignited our subject’s hatred of those creepy clowns.

Joining us again will be one of our favorite heart racing horror pages on instagram @niks.horror.flix to monitor and share her own results. How will the analysis of a horror junkie compare to our terrified horror novice?

Test Subject: Leah & NIkki

Gender: Female

Fears: Clowns / Ghosts

Resting HR: 62-65 bpm

Walking HR: 80-85 bpm

Leah = Red Line Nikki = Black Line

Leah and Nikki had extremely similar results. But as a horror junkie with repeated exposure to the macabre, Nikki’s heart rate produced lower numbers due to desensitization. Yet even with the varying levels, our scale is in agreement, whatever happened after the thirty minute mark was truly terrifying.

1:16:45 – This show has lost me. Too much human carnage and that lake of fire scene was just bad.

FEARSCALE ANALYSIS:

Once again we found ourselves counting down the days to opening night at the Abaddon hotel with scenes consisting of interviews and flashbacks. This mild introduction kept our subject’s heart rate hovering near her resting average and lulling her into a false sense of security. Little did she know that waiting around the corner were visuals so terrifying, they would spike her heart rate to a new FearScale record peak of 107bpm. Our subject later revealed that anticipation built from the original film increased her anxiety as the paranormal instances began to pile up. Jolts above 90bpm continued to occur during the middle of the film. She jumped and squirmed as several dark moments within the hotel, reminiscent to the original film, created extreme unease. But our subject’s numbers began to drastically drop shattering our expectations of a frightening finale. Scenes of chaos and gore had little effect as she witnessed a low budget, mildly entertaining conclusion to the trilogy.

CONCLUSION:

Lake of Fire felt eerily familiar. Many of the terrifying moments that worked in the original still produced the same level of fear. But unlike Hell House LLC, Lake of Fire got trapped within an overly complicated story. The lengthy introduction failed to establish high numbers while an attempt to provide a satisfying conclusion diminished the scares. The record breaking peak however proved that the creators of the Hell House franchise know the winning formula to make a heart race. Dark, winding corridors filled with elaborate creepy AF props continued to produce nightmarish levels of anxiety. And that blueprint will always be a recipe for success in burning calories.
