Since December 21 when Bird Box (2018) began streaming on Netflix the film has garnished love, hate and memes. Under a slew of mixed reviews we decided to strap our subject onto her couch, hook up the heart monitor and find out if the hype is truly deserved. How scary could it be?
Test Subject: Leah (Mother of three)
Age : 35
Gender: Female
Fears: Ghosts
Resting HR: 65 bpm
Walking HR: 75-80 bpm
ANALYSIS:
From the initial terror of the inciting incident our subject was locked in to the tragic events unfolding. It only took ten minutes for us to see a major increase in her vitals, jumping from her resting 65bpm to 95bpm. Our highest recorded numbers to date arrived about one hour into the film hitting multiple peaks over 100bpm. At one hour eighteen minutes our subject’s heart rate spiked at 106bpm which is an unbelievable number for a resting body sitting motionless on the couch.

CONCLUSION:
We heard several fans on social media chat about how boring they thought this movie was but in the same breath mentioned being stressed at times. This film is a perfect example of why we don’t call our site ScareScale. Fear is what drives the heart and while this movie isn’t all that scary and may have other plot/character issues it does create an intense atmosphere. One that continuously abused our subject with psychological torture.
Note: Our subject is a mother of three children so if you find yourself empathizing with the main character like she did then you will feel the stress this film can induce.
