Since we are huge fans of the Halloween franchise we chose not to monitor the new film in theaters and watch it instead. Now with the home release we decided it’s time to introduce the new part two to an apprehensive subject. Will there be enough fear in this Halloween sequel to raise the rates above the original?
Test Subject: Jackie
Age : 34
Gender: Female
Fears: Heights
Resting HR: 62-65 bpm
Walking HR: 75-80 bpm
ANALYSIS:
A slow opening lulled our subject and kept her heart rate near resting numbers for more than twenty five minutes. Soon we were able to pinpoint exact scenes in the film responsible for giving her pulse some life. Let’s identify the two spikes early on:
30:30 Bus Crash
39:30 Bathroom Scene
After those respectable jumps we fell back into unproductive numbers before hitting her peak another twenty minutes later. An extremely tense scene raised our subject’s heart rate to 99bpm and at that point, much like the original film in 1978 the chase was on. With only a few dips her heart rate stayed elevated till the conclusion but never did reach impressive numbers.
CONCLUSION:
Slightly underwhelming results for such a highly anticipated sequel. While there were intense moments worth noting, the film did not produce the extreme numbers we would have expected from the hype. While it may rank higher than many of the sequels, this Halloween 2018 version fails to surpass the original in overall tension. This should not dissuade fans from enjoying the kill scenes and beautiful lighting surrounding the classic monster. Michael Myers is still a dark force to be reckoned with but you may need a double viewing this Halloween if you’re going to burn off that pumpkin pie!
