Wake up. Find a theater. Monitor a movie. Repeat. In 2017, Happy Death Day surprised us with its clever and amusing tale of repetitiveness. But how would a sequel deliver new scares to an audience prepared for the gimmick? We monitored our subject’s physiological reactions of Happy Death Day 2U in the theater to see if Blumhouse Productions could repeat the success of their original hit over and over again.
Test Subject: Leah
Age: 35
Gender: Female
Fears: Heights / Insects
Resting HR: 62-65 bpm
Walking HR: 80-85 bpm
ANALYSIS:
During the first act we noticed each time loop bringing minor bumps in our subject’s heart rate. There was an intense scene at 42:00 which would cause the highest recorded peak of 88bpm. We also noted one jump (hint hint) at 48:00 caused by laughter and another at 1:12in a heavy scene which brought our subject to tears. These varying emotional responses other than fear caused several fluctuations which factored into the overall average.
CONCLUSION:
Happy Death Day 2U doubled the fun of the original. It kept each loop fresh and thrived on the killer anticipation of what’s going to happen next time. The film turned out to be a technologically charged race against time. Hitting emotional peaks along with a few well-timed jumps our subject was able to burn through 178 calories. Unfortunately for your diet repeat viewings will be necessary if you want to burn off the chocolate death cake.
Happy Death Day 2U : Burns an average of 178 Calories
