Since its initial release, Mosquito (1994) has gained a cult following in the horror community. But would the popularity of this mutated insect film have the same effect on our subject? Read the complete analysis below.
What is FearScale? We’ve all heard the expression ‘Scared to Death’ or how something ‘Made My Heart Skip a Beat’, but what does that actually look like? Studies have shown that even when subjected to stimuli that can not present a true threat of danger, our bodies will still produce a physiological response. By analyzing real-time results we are able to give you the most accurate reviews for anything that makes your heart race.
Where To Watch:
SYNOPSIS:
A violent massacre caused by human-sized mosquitoes forces the lone survivors to band together in a fight for survival as the mosquitoes continue their onslaught.
Test Subject: Leah
Age: 35
Gender: Female
Fears: Bees / Frogs
Resting HR: 62-65bpm
Walking HR: 80-85bpm
ANALYSIS:
One minor jump scare early on bumped our subject’s heart rate by 2bpm. But at 15:00, our subject’s pulse dipped below her recorded resting average, something we never like to see at FearScale. After that initial fall however, a combination of poor effects, laughter and gore lifted her heart rate to 72bpm at 21:00. And at 25:00, more butt cheeky fun sustained her elevated numbers for a short while. Our subject began to lose patience as slow monologues dragged her past the one hour mark. Much of the amusing campiness dwindled but a few battle scenes were able to spark her dying pulse back to life. Unfortunately, a drawn out finale with one of the slowest dumbwaiters in history crushed any hope of maintaining a high level. If not for the empathy of a favorite main character, our subjects numbers may have never increased again.
CONCLUSION:
Mosquito (1994) had enough butts, blood and laughable special effects to be considered a campy classic. But the lack of true suspense sucked any scares from the film. A horror fan may have enjoyed the appearance of Gunnar Hansen wielding a chainsaw again but our average viewer failed to connect with the character. Watch for fun, nostalgia or to be simply grossed out, but don’t watch to be scared. We will continue our search to find a truly terrifying insect horror movie.
