After having a horrific experience with a certain airline over the last few days, we decided to search out the most heart racing airplane movies. With the help of the Instagram community we chose to monitor Red Eye (2005). Could this thriller directed by horror legend Wes Craven send our subject’s pulse flying into record breaking numbers?
What is FearScale? We’ve all heard the expression ‘Scared to Death’ or how something ‘Made My Heart Skip a Beat’, but what does that actually look like? Studies have shown that even when subjected to stimuli that can not present a true threat of danger, our bodies will still produce a physiological response. By analyzing real-time results we are able to give you the most accurate reviews for anything that makes your heart race.
Test Subject: Leah
Age : 35
Gender: Female
Fears: Aerophobia (Fear of Flying)
Resting HR: 62-65 bpm
Walking HR: 80-85 bpm
ANALYSIS:
A mild first two acts left our subject wondering why this film was categorized as horror, but by 57:00 she finally figured it out. A scene she won’t soon forget jolted her pulse awake sending it to 89bpm. Moments later her heart rate took off faster than a boeing jet racing to a tremendous peak of 101bpm as an explosive finale brought soaring numbers. Our subject’s mind raced as well as her heart during a third act which provided us this mountainous FearScale.
CONCLUSION:
If not for the slow build this thriller may have set new records, but the meat of the suspense didn’t rev up until almost an hour into an already short film. We’ve never recorded a scale this divided but without the build up of the main characters we wouldn’t have seen the tension escalate so quickly. This FearScale visually represents how director Wes Craven crafted a suspenseful airplane thriller with a takeoff and landing.
Subject Note: Most of the extreme heart racing numbers did not occur until after the characters were off the plane in this airplane horror.
