To counteract the warm weather in Florida we decided to monitor No Exit (2022), a snowy thriller available now on Hulu. Our latest subject suffers from Cleithrophobia but felt ready to watch this wintry release. Find out if suspenseful twists were enough to raise her heart rate to terrifyingly high levels.

SYNOPSIS:

During a blizzard and stranded at an isolated highway rest stop in the mountains, a college student discovers a kidnapped child hidden in a car belonging to one of the people inside.

ANALYSIS:

Our subject immediately empathized with the main character who was dealing with hard hitting issues within the first ten minutes. These moments weren’t heart racing but they did setup character development which would affect our subject in later scenes. A shocking surprise at 19:00 produced the first true spike raising our subjects heart rate to 81bpm. Even as an innocent card game slowed her pulse there was underlying tension which carried through the rest of the film. Along with an ominous score, the suspenseful storyline had our subject biting her nails twenty four minutes in. No Exit produced a peak heart rate of 87bpm, not by scares or gore but by ratcheting up the tension to create anxiety in our subject. Numbers stayed elevated as the film’s finale intensified and delivered a gruesome ending that would even satisfy true horror fans.

CONCLUSION:

No Exit is a frigidly fun thriller with a simple story that really nails the twists. Share on X There are stereotypical characters and a familiar plot but the misdirection of the storytelling is what sets this film apart. From one suspenseful scene to the next our subject was on the edge of her seat trying to figure out what will happen next. No Exit sustained a moderately high heart rate throughout most of the film even though there were only a few truly shocking scenes. If your weapon of choice is a vodka screwdriver on a cold winter night, you’ll have no problem watching those calories burn away.
