Scream

ANALYSIS:

Instantly, our subject’s heart began to race as she recognized the films opening. Terrifying trivia and brutal gore ramped up her pulse to 92bpm from a resting 65bpm. Fifteen minutes later she was introduced to familiar characters, where once again everyone was a suspect, and the murder mystery began to drop clues. The impressive kill scenes first established tension then led to slow and agonizing torture. This combination steadily raised our subject’s heart rate to extremely high levels each time Ghostface was on screen. At 1:05, an emotional, gruesome attack added another level of anxiety and we recorded an impressive peak of 96bpm. It was later revealed to us that our subject was holding her breath during this lengthy scene and her exhale is what brought on our highest peak in over a year.

CONCLUSION:

Scream is a familiar but updated slasher for a new generation ready to play. Share on X Our subject’s physiological response delivered multiple spikes over 90bpm. Even though she struggled to relate with the latest suspects, the original cast along with plenty of surprises had her emotionally invested. As I was making notes, I immediately compared the film to Star Wars, A New Hope Vs. The Force Awakens, and to my surprise, this comparison was also brought up in the film. Sure, the true die hard Scream fans will see this as a carbon copy, or ‘requel’ of the original, but for a young crowd, looking for their first heart racing Scream, well, Randy said it best, “They used a formula, a very simple formula!” and it worked.
