For our Labor Day experiment we’ve chosen to monitor Severance, even though for us, a horror film called ‘Furloughed’ may have been more appropriate. Severance is a 2006 British-German comedy horror film co-written and directed by Christopher Smith (Triangle 2009). Find out if the physiological reactions from our subject with a fear of hard work paid off.

ANALYSIS:
A tense opening scene broke into a rocking soundtrack and established a bus full of comedic characters. Trippy moments had our subject entertained but her heart rate continued to hover near her resting average. At 24:00 however, her pulse quickened as a haunting atmosphere enveloped the actors. Several scenes used misdirection which had our subject guessing one way only to be shocked by the unexpected. This clever filmmaking built suspense and anticipation in an otherwise mild situation. We recorded unusually high spikes, above 80bpm, for a horror comedy. At 38:30 our subject endured one of her creepy crawly fears which boosted her pulse to 86bpm. And these impressive numbers concluded with a tremendous reward. At 1:21, our subject hit her peak heart rate of 102bpm. She yelled out and cringed during a scene that would make anyone unable to sit comfortably for a week.
CONCLUSION:
Severance (2006) is a dark and humorous horror filled with likable characters you want to root for. This empathy along with laughs and nail biting tension combined to produce the highest heart rates we’ve ever recorded in a horror comedy. So if you’re working hard this Labor day to find an amusing, pulse pounding film with plenty of gore, watch Severance and find out what could possibly get a heart racing to 102bpm while sitting motionless.
