ANALYSIS:

Terrifier 3 began with an extremely suspenseful and discomforting scene which rocketed our subject’s heart rate from her resting 63bpm into the 90’s within the first ten minutes. We didn’t get the sense of a story until twenty minutes in but we also didn’t feel that was the intent of this film. After 20:00, our subject had a breather where her heart rate settled, but it never truly sank back to her resting average. Her time-out did not last long. Another incredibly strange and disturbing scene produced a spike to 104bpm. Our subject witnessed traumatic gore that would be imprinted on her psyche for years to come. All of it was jolly fun and games until 1:12. At this point, the film took an upsetting turn. A scene which made us all question, how far is too far? It was shocking, but not terrifying and it took our subject out of the film for about five minutes wondering if this was enjoyable or just wrong to be watching. Her heart rate lowered to 70bpm while the film attempted to unravel a plot. At 1:27 we were back to business with an extremely high 108bpm peak during a shower scene that would make Hitchcock roll over in his grave. This outrageous scene produced a FearScale First: Loud Noise Environment alert on our watches. We monitored our subject in her most uncomfortable states while she squirmed, cringed and gagged. This would lead to a finale with more terror, more blood, and more WTF moments than I personally have witnessed in a horror film.

Terrifier 3

CONCLUSION:

Terrifier 3 (2024) is a terrifyingly brutal film deserving of all the warning signs it comes with. Share on X The film is capable of producing extremely high and possibly dangerous heart rates with multiple spikes above 100bpm. A Christmas theme is always fun and the gore was over-the-top. Even with so many practical effects, the film had time to ratchet up suspense, tension and anxiety. Before this film, I considered myself a big horror fan. I grew up with Halloween (1978), which had very little blood. But after viewing, I found myself questioning what makes myself, or any person for that matter, excited to watch something like this. I believe that’s exactly what the creators of Terrifier set out to do: release something so grotesque and twisted that people can’t help but talk about it. I just wonder where do we go from here? To me, that is what’s terrifying.
