ANALYSIS:

The film’s opening moments introduced an intriguing mystery. One that would mildy affect our subject as she watched a couple of teenagers disappear into the snowy woods. After the initial drama, the pace of the film slowed as the parents pondered various decisions without making any. Our subject’s first recorded tension arose at 33:00 but even that mark could not escalate above her resting numbers. Our subject struggled to empathize with the flat characters and grew impatient with the meandering script. The few instances that brought about heart rate fluctuations were similar confrontations with a recurring character. Thankfully we had one scene during the finale that drove our subject’s heart rate from 64bpm to her peak of 78bpm before slipping once again.

CONCLUSION:

The Lie (2020) is a slow burn drama dealing with a desperate situation. Though the film had no sense of urgency, its saving grace was the gut-punch of an ending. We expected much higher numbers when we read the heart racing synopsis but the sluggish pace and lack of tension left little to get excited about. And that’s the terrifying truth about The Lie.
