When Evil Lurks (2023) is a supernatural horror available to stream on Hulu. The film has been recommended to us by several members of the horror community as a must-see for it’s grotesque and shocking nature. With that being said, we found the perfect subject who suffers with Trypophobia, or fear of gross stuff. Let the fun begin.

SYNOPSIS:

In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to “give birth” to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body, only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos.

ANALYSIS:

When Evil Lurks kicked off immediately with gunshots, an investigation and a grotesque discovery. Questions began to pile up yet our subject’s heart rate remained close to her resting average. She was captivated by the unfolding plot and as an impending evil revealed itself her heart rate began to flutter. The haunting atmosphere assisted in causing our subject’s heart rate to elevate as the anticipation of a scare gradually grew. A shocking moment at 27:00 produced a spike of 84bpm. This scene was brutal but nothing would prepare our subject for one of the most horrific movie scenes we have witnessed in recent years. There was a slow building expectation of what was about to happen putting our subject on edge. When the fear bit, she nearly fell off the couch. Her heart rate rocketed to the highest recorded peak of the film at 91bpm. It took over five minutes for her heart rate to slow back to a comfortable level. The pace slowed during the third act but the disturbing scenes picked back up at 1:00 and had our subject squirming throughout the finale.

CONCLUSION:

When Evil Lurks (2023) is a highly stressful film with gruesome effects capable of producing significantly high heart rates.
