ANALYSIS:

Abigail (2024) started off as your typical kidnapping movie with a cast of characters that were difficult to empathize with. Our subject felt mild tension during the first act but it wasn’t until 30 minutes into the film that our subject felt the first hints of true stress. A quick jump scare at 33:00 gave her a jolt but she was able to quickly recover. Once regular attacks began to present themselves, our subject’s heart raced to the low 80’s. Many kills were off- screen and we only witnessed the aftermath which brought a decent amount of gore, but diminished the tension. There were a few suspenseful scenes and of course the shocking gore had a hand in ratcheting up her numbers. At 50:00, we recorded a peak 83bpm during a monstrous attack but the film teetered between terrifying and comedic which prevented more frightening results.

CONCLUSION:

Abigail (2024) is a gory blood-soaked ballerina nightmare that results in high energy but low scares. Share on X Occasionally, the plot resorted to telling rather than showing the story. This left several scenes full of extensive dialogue that slowed momentum. And while the special effects were impressive, the antics bordered on outlandish and at times it felt like we were watching a bloody Home Alone. This didn’t make the film any less fun to watch but Abigail was lacking a scary bite.
