Obsession

The wait is finally over.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to conduct a theatrical FearScale monitoring session for Obsession, but ever since the first wave of glowing reviews arrived, we’ve been…well…obsessed.

Written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker, the horror thriller began life as inspiration from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror before evolving into one of the year’s biggest horror surprises. Despite the enormous hype, one question remained:

Just how scary is Obsession?

Our latest FearScale subject suffers from Philophobia – the fear of becoming emotionally attached. Would that real-life fear influence her heart rate as she’s introduced to a wish that quickly spirals into something terrifying?

The results surprised even us.

SYNOPSIS:

After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

FearScale™ Methodology

FearScale measures how frightening a horror film truly is by monitoring real-time heart rate data from human test subjects during controlled viewing sessions. Each subject’s baseline resting heart rate is recorded prior to the film, allowing us to identify meaningful spikes caused by tension, dread, shock, or sustained unease.

Heart rate increases are tracked throughout the runtime and correlated with specific scenes to determine when fear responses occur, and how intense they are. This data-driven approach helps separate genuine physiological reactions from subjective opinions or post-viewing impressions.

Because fear is personal, FearScale does not claim universal results. Instead, each session offers an objective snapshot of how a film impacts the human body under consistent conditions, providing a unique, measurable lens on horror.

FEARSCALE ANALYSIS:

The film opens with a humorous pair of characters and an immediately sympathetic lead, taking its time before unleashing the horror. During the first 25 minutes, there are very few moments that significantly elevate our subject’s heart rate.

Around the 12-minute mark, we’re introduced to the main character’s object of affection, and the awkward chemistry between them slowly develops. Once the mysterious wish is made, however, everything changes. The cinematography immediately becomes darker and more unsettling. Strange behavior and subtle visual clues create a growing sense of unease, but our subject’s pulse remains surprisingly controlled…until the 28-minute mark.

That’s when the first jolt lands.

From there, emotional tension and supernatural dread become intertwined. The film expertly uses lingering camera shots, uncomfortable silence, and unsettling background movement to create paranoia. Like the snapping of the Wish Willow, the scares appear suddenly before disappearing just as quickly.

Some of the film’s most effective moments don’t rely on loud noises at all. Instead, the shadowy figure quietly occupies edges of the frame, rewarding attentive viewers while punishing anyone who looks away for even a second.

Without spoiling the story, the final act builds into an absolutely relentless climax. Our subject reached her peak heart rate of 104 BPM at the 1:28 mark, when one devastating jump scare led directly into one of the year’s most brutal kills. It was the only moment where she immediately wanted to drive out of the room.

As shown in our FearScale graph, Obsession delivers one of the cleanest tension curves we’ve monitored this year. Slow, deliberate escalation followed by an explosive surge into triple-digit heart rates.

CONCLUSION:

Obsession earns every bit of the praise it’s receiving.Through outstanding camera composition, creeping tension, and brilliantly timed reveals, Curry Barker creates a modern horror villain who is equal parts seductive and terrifying. Like Fatal Attraction, the film explores the dangers of unhealthy fixation, but filters those ideas through a supernatural nightmare filled with unforgettable imagery and brutal violence.

Our subject’s heart rate told the same story.

A peak of 104 BPM, 281 calories burned, and an Intense Fear rating make Obsession one of the strongest FearScale performances we’ve monitored this year.

It’s not just a scary movie. It’s a kick ass horror flick. By the time the credits roll, you’ll understand why horror fans can’t stop talking about it.

Best Viewing Environment for Obsession:

A completely dark room is essential.
Much of the film’s horror comes from barely visible figures hiding within the darkness of the frame. Watching in daylight or with lights on will almost certainly cause you to miss some of its creepiest visual details.

Bonus points if you watch with someone you’re emotionally attached to.

Fear Calorie Burn Comparison:

Watching Obsession burned an estimated 281 calories, which is roughly equivalent to:
• Walking about 2 miles

Not a replacement for the gym…
…but definitely a better excuse to watch more horror.
