ANALYSIS:
The opening of the film provides a convincing history of a fictional late night television show while establishing a creepy cult backstory. The filmmakers created an amazingly accurate representation of a 1970’s studio show. Our subject was entertained by the novelty acts performing and she was able to rest comfortably without heart fluctuations for the first twenty minutes. As the show progressed, we were introduced to strange characters. There was a quiet and unnerving hush that fell upon the studio audience and finally, our subject’s heart rate began to escalate. At 48:00 the film took on a much darker tone and produced a 73bpm spike. Our subject was mesmerized by the engaging performance of Ingrid Torelli. Her eerie acting led to an incredibly stressful moment at 54:00 that rocketed our subject’s heart rate to its max peak of 85bpm while she witnessed a chilling moment unfold on screen. Another slippery scene utilizing practical effects grossed her out and caused another impressive 84bpm bump. Unfortunately, weak computer graphics during the finale removed tension from our subject during some of the more explosive moments. But the wild energy of the twists kept her engaged throughout the third act.
CONCLUSION:
Late Night with the Devil (2023) is a slow, unsettling drama that unfolds in a clever and unique way. Share on X The scares were minimal but the sense of unease grew throughout the film producing moderate heart rate numbers in our subject. It was refreshing to watch a rare found-footage film that didn’t resort to the typical shaky handheld camera that audiences have grown accustomed too. Late Night with the Devil was not terrifying but it’s definitely one cool ass movie.
